At American University of Sharjah (AUS), we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students have equal opportunities to thrive academically and socially. We believe in providing comprehensive support to students with disabilities, ensuring they have the necessary accommodations to excel in their academic pursuits. AUS conducts accessibility audits and adheres to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for campus infrastructure and is a member of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD).

Support for students with disabilities

Long-term disabilities

AUS offers a well-established protocol to support students with long-term disabilities academically. Accommodations are available, along with clear policies and guidelines. Referral lists for academic accommodations from various organizations in the UAE are provided. Documentation such as Academic Accommodations Contracts and Faculty Letters are provided to eligible students. Click here to learn more.

Short-term disabilities

A new policy has been developed to address the needs of students experiencing short-term disabilities, including sudden illness or injury. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving multiple departments to ensure swift and effective support for students in need.

Office of Student Affairs initiatives

Efforts are underway to empower students with disabilities through involvement in extracurricular activities and leadership roles. Personalized communication, training opportunities and on-campus employment options are being provided to facilitate their engagement within the university community.

Students with disabilities training

The Academic Support Center is developing an online training program for AUS faculty and staff to raise awareness and understanding of students with disabilities. Collaborative efforts with the Office of Student Affairs will extend training initiatives to the student community.

Campus infrastructure

AUS conducts accessibility audits and adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for campus infrastructure. Plans are in place to address accessibility concerns across the campus, including short-term and long-term strategies.

AUS Library support

The AUS Library is actively working to improve support for students with diverse learning requirements. Recommendations for enhancing accessibility in library resources, facilities and services are being implemented.

AUS online accessibility

Efforts are underway to enhance the accessibility of the AUS website. The transition to Blackboard Ultra in Fall 2024 will include the implementation of Ally plug-ins to facilitate accessibility on academic platforms.

Safety and security measures

AUS embarked on campus-wide implementation of evacuation chairs and visual alerts to enhance safety for students with disabilities during emergencies.
